Feed

The species is carnivorous. They consume pellet feed. The fish-in-fish-out ratio is low, meaning that quite a low volume of fish is input into this farming system as feed to produce one kilogram of salmon. All the feed used is traceable and sustainable. All the fishmeal and oil for salmon feed production is sourced from local and predominantly healthy fish stocks.

Ecological effects

This production method is an open net-pen system that has direct interaction with the marine environment. This means that all fish waste, uneaten feed and antibiotics used enter the environment and accumulate in the sediment. Escape of cultured salmon is serious in the region. The production system uses chemicals regularly but only by prescription.

Management

The regulatory framework is largely effective and addresses most issues sufficiently. Management covers environmental monitoring and reporting, compliance, enforcement and transparency, stakeholder’s participation, etc. However, other categories, such as habitat protection and waste discharge appear to be not as well addressed.
