Source of fry
Hatchery-based and juvenile production using wild-caught brood stock.
Feed
The source of feed is vast, largely from pellet feed. The formula feed mainly consists of soybean meal and most of them are GM food.
Ecological effects
Chemicals are used to prevent disease in this production method, which will affect the pond’s water quality. Meanwhile, the water discharge will increase eutrophication to the surrounding area. Since farmed grass carps are hatchery based, the escaped grass carp may bring moderate to high impact to the wild.
Management
There is a lack of comprehensive environmental impact assessment. China is focusing on land and water use, habitat protection and chemical usage. The overall management is partly effective.
