Stock status

There are hundreds of stocks of chum salmon throughout the state of Alaska and their population trends are diverse. About two-thirds of the sub-regions harvest is below the respective recent 10-year harvest average. Stocks appear healthy with no signs of overfishing. 

Ecological effects

Troll lining does not have any interaction with endangered, threatened, protected (ETP) species. The bycatch rate of this fishery is low. Discard rate of this fishery is moderate but has a low survival rate. Chum salmon is a keystone species in Alaska, meaning that this species holds together the entire ecosystem.  

Management

This fishery is managed under the Alaska Board of Fisheries (BOF), the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) and the North Pacific Fishery Management Council. Management measures include protection of ETP species, stock and harvest monitoring, combating illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishery, restrictions in the number of fishing vessels. Management is considered largely effective.
