Whelk from Canada are majorly sourced from the 15 whelk fishing areas in Québec inshore waters. Overfishing of whelk in Québec waters is not occurring.
Ecological effects
Whelk pots are a highly selective gear. Bycatch of other species is minimum, and any unwanted bycatch can be returned to the sea alive.
Management
Several management measures are in place in Québec including protection of endangered, threatened, protected (ETP) species and vessels monitoring. Temporal closures and technical requisites of the fishing gear are in place to avoid Northern Atlantic right whale entanglement in trap ropes. Moreover, every three years a sustainable management plan is designed for whelk fisheries in Québec inshore waters. The management system is partly effective.
